This is the pivot of the entire argument, and it is built not on any single document but on a comparison of two documented states of the world: what the record shows was present, and what is present now.

1.1 — What was documented to be there
Across the 16th to 18th centuries, the evidence assembled in Parts 2 and 3 shows a substantial, visible Jewish and Judaizing presence across West and Central Africa: the port of 'Juda' marked on the maps of five European powers; over 120,000 Jews expelled from Iberia into the Portuguese trade world; documented communities on São Tomé, the Angola coast, Luango, Guinea, and the Dahomey interior; 328 Inquisition accusations of Judaism in the single settlement of Cacheu; named crypto-Jewish trading lineages; and Livingstone's 'Jews of Angola' still identifiable in 1847.
