Standing Firm in Turbulent Times
As we honor this Shabbat, I am reminded of the importance of standing firm in our faith, even in the face of turmoil and uncertainty. The prophet Jeremiah's words echo in my mind: "Behold, I have made thee this day as a strong city, and as a brazen wall, strong against all the kings of Juda, and the princes thereof, and the people of the land" (Jeremiah 1:18). This promise of strength and protection is not just for Jeremiah, but for all of us who put our trust in YaHWaH.
In Jeremiah 1:1-2:30, we see the prophet's call to speak truth to a nation that has forsaken YaHWaH. The people of Israel turned to idolatry and rebellion, and YaHWaH is calling them to account. This theme of judgment and accountability is also reflected in Psalm 75:1-10, where we read, "For YaHWaH is the judge; he puts down one, and raises up another" (Psalm 75:7). As we navigate the challenges of our own lives, we must remember that YaHWaH is our judge and our deliverer.
The current tensions between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, with Pakistan warning of a potential Mecca Defense Pact, serve as a reminder of the turbulent times in which we live. Scripture tells us that such conflicts may precede a time of reckoning, as seen in Jeremiah's prophecies against the nations. However, we must not speculate or predict the future, but rather focus on standing firm in our faith and trusting in YaHWaH's sovereignty.
